Loads of Fun for Lori Kircher

Lori Kircher, Billing Director for Independent, enjoyed Whitewater Rafting in Jim Thorpe, PA last weekend.  Everyone who knows Lori knows she has a wild side.  One more thing she can cross off her "bucket list".  Yes she has one.

La Prade, Rini Join Delaware State News Reporting Team

Neighbors may remember a little Eleanor La Prade conducting interviews as a precocious four-year-old with notebooks "borrowed" from her father. La Prade, hailing from a newspaper family, has always had a passion for community journalism.

Now as a reporter for the Delaware State News she looks to make a difference on a local level in Kent County.

Originally from Salisbury, M.D., Ms. La Prade ventured up the coast to New England to study literature at Thomas More College of Liberal Arts in New Hampshire. In addition to enjoying the coffee shops and book stores in the Boston Metropolitan area, she interned for two semesters with The Telegraph in Nashua, N.H. with the copy desk as well as a special assignment reporter.

When she's not in the newsroom, Ms. La Prade enjoys reading the classics, writing, as well as traveling. She has bartered with gypsies in Rome and taught photography at a Boy Scouts camp in Wyoming.

Jen Rini started work as a reporter at The Delaware State News on Aug. 27.

When she heard she got the job, Ms. Rini scrambled to move from Morristown, New Jersey. She said everything fell into place; in just two weeks, she was shopping for a toaster for her downtown Dover apartment.

There was only one obstacle. “Being from New Jersey, I’m going to have to learn to pump my own gas,” she said.

Ms. Rini has been pursuing journalism since high school, when her big dream was to be a features editor for Glamour.

She graduated from University of Delaware in January with a major in mass communications. In college, she wrote for The Review, U. Del.’s student newspaper, and interned for National Geographic Kids.

In her free time, Ms. Rini dances and practices yoga. She’s excited to get involved in the community – and, through her work, make difference in it.

PDC Recognized Independent For Annual Sponsorship

The Peoria Diamond Club, a nonprofit organization that supports youth charities in the Phoenix metropolitan market, recently recognized the efforts of Independent Newspapers and its long-time support of the organization. During its annual meeting held last month, the PDC thanked the Independent for its annual sponsorship of the organization's annual charity game, which serves to kick off the spring training season in Peoria. The game, featuring the Seattle Mariners and San Diego Padres, each year raises over $100,000 for the PDC.

Advertising Blitz a Success

The West Valley office found success in a one-day digital advertising blitz Aug. 22 that included the entire staff.

The company’s revamped Web site gained four new ads, two skyscrapers and two rectangles that will bring in $496 per month. Some are expected to start in September.

Duane Clark, pictured, led the way by selling two of the four ads, one skyscraper and one rectangle.

The staff made hundreds of contacts during the day, using e-mail, telephone and even some in-person contacts. Some of those expressed an interest and promised to research the possibilities and get back to ad consultants.

West Valley staffers also received a lot of feedback from those contents about the redesigned Web site. All the feedback received so far was positive, with most saying it looks much better and is easier to navigate.

Charlene Augustine of Parkway Bank of Chicago sent an e-mail that typified the response received, both about the Web site and advertising.  Thanks for the info about your revamped website (looks great!) and the available advertising opportunities.  I’ll bring it up at my next meeting with our executives and will get back to you if there’s any interest in running an ad soon.”

New Face at the Delaware State News

The Delaware State News recently welcomed Katrina Sullivan to the Advertising sales team.  Katrina is the new Ad Manager for the downtown Dover and west Dover areas.  She brings with her 6 ½ years of print and online media experience. Katrina shares her thoughts on advertising sales, “I absolutely love the thrill of the chase and then the close. I believe advertising is an investment for a business and my job is to get them their return - people walking in their doors!! Meeting new people and learning new things are what keeps me motivated. I believe in energy, enthusiasm and integrity in all aspects of life.”  When Katrina isn’t busy selling, she enjoys hanging out with her family and a very close circle of friends, reading books and listening to ALL types of music.  She is from Caroline County, Maryland, and she already loves Dover.

New Classified/Customer Service Manager at DSN

Delaware State News publisher Ed Dulin recently announced that long-time Classified Consultant Dianna Sellers has been named the Classified/Customer Service Manager.

Dianna started her career with INI in January 2004 in the Classified Dept. and has remained in the same department ever since.  Before coming to the Delaware State News Dianna worked in the finance industry for CitiFinancial as an Assistant Manager doing lending and collections for 20 years.

She was born and raised in Dover, and all her family is here.  Dianna shares her home with her fiancée’ and their 10-year old yellow English lab “River” and a Red Eared Slider turtle named “Link.”  When not busy at work or caring for her pets, Dianna enjoys photography, reading and she is an avid “stitcher” --- counted cross stitch, needle point and crochet. She learned to crochet from her aunt and State News Advertising Support Manager Sharon Harvey who can do magic with a crochet hook.  Sharon isn’t the only DSN staffer related to Dianna.  Dianna’s grandfather, Sam Moore, and her uncle, Charles Moore, were part of the Delaware State News’ first press crew when the newspaper began daily publication in 1953.

Pictured from left to right on that historic press team are Charles, Jerry Mach, Bob Donaway, Al Buck and Sam, who served Independent for 25 years.

Ed points out, “Dianna practically has printing ink in her veins!  That teamed with her years of experience on the Classified team and as a Manager make her the best choice to lead the Classified and Customer Service teams.”

Delaware State News is GREAT at the Fair!

The Delaware State News put together a dynamic visual presence at the Delaware State Fair on their opening day.  These four vending machines were used to distribute free copies of the Delaware State News including the “Official Program” for the Fair.  Our advertisers were very happy with the program which in addition to the free distribution on the fairgrounds; it was included in the State News on 3 different dates and posted online at http://delaware.newszap.com.  Thanks to Don Clendaniel and the distribution team for setting up these vending machines and to Promotions Manager Heather Cregar and Graphic Artist Tim Menasco for putting together the signs.

"Newsy" in Training

The Delaware State News recently hosted a youth intern from the Elizabeth W. Murphey School as part of their “Operation Leg-Up” program.  This program offers their teenage residents the opportunity to work with local businesses to learn about work ethics and experience an actual business environment.  The hope is that this will better prepare them as they enter the workforce in the future.  The program lasted for 6-weeks and the DSN intern Ciara Morris-Wright worked with a different team each week and did everything from schedule ads in Media Plus, pull tearsheets, send out email requests for weather pictures and check vending machines.  She was very busy!  Everyone was impressed with Ciara.  Long-time DSN Advertising Consultant Barbara Bryan commented after working a day with Ciara, “Bring her back in 2 years when she’s 18 and hire her!”

Bret McKeand Named President of Independent's Arizona Operations

Independent Newsmedia Inc. USA has named Bret McKeand president of its printing, publishing and digital operations in Arizona --- a network that includes 12 community newspapers, the arizona.newszap.com websites, and a commercial printing plant that has served the Valley of the Sun for nearly four decades.
“Our board of directors felt this was well-deserved recognition of Bret’s stellar leadership”, board chairman Joe Smyth said. “He has proven himself to be a great fit with INI’s values. He has a can-do attitude, is committed to continuous learning, seeks win-win solutions for everybody, loves to help others realize their full potential, and holds himself accountable for producing positive results. We’re lucky to have him as our president and chief operating officer in Arizona as well as a valued member of INI’s overall senior leadership team.”

A 30-year veteran of the newspaper industry, Bret joined the staff of the Independent 29 years ago as a reporter for the Sun City Independent. He was named editor of the Sun City newspaper in 1985 and publisher of the company’s West Valley operations in 1987. He has served as the vice president of Arizona publishing operations since 2004.
Despite an economy that continues to struggle in Arizona, Bret is confident the company is well positioned to not only weather the storm, but continue to grow its printing, publishing and digital operations. “In good times or bad, we’ve never wavered in our commitment – our devotion really – to providing the best local news, delivering quality print and digital products and serving the needs of our readers, advertisers and printing clients,” he said.

“With last year’s doubling of press capacity, our printing operation is emerging as one of the premiere print facilities in all the Southwest, serving dozens of fine printing clients in addition to our own publications. At Valley Newspapers, we have state-of-the-art equipment and a great staff of creative, competent team members who want to be the best at everything they do,” Bret added.
“And the recent re-launch of arizona.newszap.com has created new opportunities for our publishing group to prove that when it comes to local news, no one else covers our communities as intensely and as completely as we do. We recognize there are lots of advertising opportunities and options out there, but the big world of social and online media can be confusing and often times simply a poor investment,” adds Bret. “We think we stand apart from others in that we can offer sensible marketing advice that combines a mix of targeted distribution, proven quality, solid readership and local expertise --- all at a very affordable price.”

Bret is a past president of the Northwest Valley Chamber of Commerce, Peoria Diamond Club and the Arizona Newspapers Association. He serves on the board of the directors of the Sun Cities Area Historical Society. In 2010 he co-authored a book on the history of Sun City, with all proceeds benefitting the historical society and the Del Webb Sun Cities Museum.
Bret, 52, and his wife, Michelle, have a son and a daughter. Michelle is a former employee of Independent and the two first met while working for the company.

Blue Cross Blue Shield Changes Name

Blue Cross Blue Shield Changes Name

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Delaware is now Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield Delaware (Highmark Delaware). This change reflects Highmark Delaware’s affiliation with Pennsylvania-based Highmark Inc., (Highmark), which was approved by the Delaware Department of Insurance in December 2011.
According to Highmark’s President, adopting the new name, emphasizes the wide range of resources available to Blue Cross Blue Shield. Although the name has changed, there is no change to the quality of health care coverage and benefits.
Brand new enrollees will receive the ID cards with the new name.  A mass mailing of new ID cards will be sent to existing members in Spring 2013.
Questions on the ID cards or any other comments can be directed to inipayroll@newszap.com.
