Pumpkin Carving Contest

Once again this year the Classified/Reader Services team has shown off their creativity by decorating pumpkins for Halloween.  Some were done by the employee and some by their children or grandchildren. Either way they are all winners. But the prize can only go to one so this year’s pumpkin decorating contest winner is Victoria Twisselmann with her very creative Cinderella Carriage.  Victoria will receive a free lunch at the restaurant of her choice.

The pumpkins are on display in the front lobby of the Delaware State News.

Thanks and Great job to all.

Look forward to Christmas when the challenge will be Gingerbread Houses.

Okeechobee News Participates in Minimal Regatta

The Okeechobee News participated in the Fourth Annual Adam Bryant Minimal Regatta on Oct. 4. The regatta, which raises money for local scholarships, is a homemade boat race. Contestants are given one piece of plywood, two 2" by 4"s, one pound of screws and one roll of duct tape and must build their own boat. Paint is allowed as a decoration (no marine paint allowed). The newspaper's boat was built and decorated by the Okeechobee 4-H Picture Perfect Photography Club, and 4-H club members rowed the boat in the races. Okeechobee News Editor Katrina Elsken is the club's leader.

The theme for this year's regatta was "starts with the letter A." While other teams decorated their entries with Aladin, Alice in Wonderland, America, Anaconda, etc., the 4-Hers declared themselves "Team Autofocus." The boat depicted a giant roll of film with photos from last year's regatta used in the frames. While we didn't win -- the boat came in 2nd in one  heat and third in another -- we celebrated that once again "WE DIDN'T SINK!"

The Okeechobee News was among the regatta sponsors who banners lined the waterway where the regatta races were held.

Independent Hosts Candidates Forum in Scottsdale

The Scottsdale and Town of Paradise Valley Independents co-sponsored a candidates forum Oct. 8 for the Scottsdale Unified School District. The event, held at the Montelucia Resort in Paradise Valley, featured the four candidates vying for two openings on the SUSD Governing Board. Editor Terrance Thornton moderated the event, asking a number of his own questions and accepting questions from the audience. The forum was the fourth hosted this year by the Independents in Arizona. The Queen Creek Independent hosted a town council candidates forum earlier this summer, as did the Town of Paradise Valley Independent (Town of Paradise Valley Town Council) and Scottsdale Independent (Scottsdale City Council).

Independent Adds “No Weapons” to Safety Policy

Independent Adds “No Weapons” to Safety Policy

In a continuing effort to provide a safe workplace for its employees, Independent changed its Health, Safety and Environment Policy to include a “No Weapons”  provision.   OSHA requires employers  have a duty to provide a safe working environment.  Independent is now one of many companies using this standard language in its workplace policies.

Below is the new policy, which can be found in the Company Handbook @ http://initoolbox.newszap.com/handbook.htm#III._Personnel_Policies_ .   Questions or comments can be emailed to inipayroll@newszap.com.

5. Health, Safety and Environment (revised 09/15/2014)

Working together, INI’s people can achieve our goal of safe, healthy and environmentally sound work conditions.

INI has zero tolerance for unsafe work, violence or threats of violence.

Each individual is responsible for conducting himself or herself in a safe and professional way, and is expected to operate all equipment according to the best practices recommended by recognized health and safety experts. Safety is also a factor to be considered in the acquisition of equipment.

In order to ensure a safe environment for employees and customers, Independent Newsmedia Inc. USA  prohibits the wearing, transporting, storage, or presence of firearms or other dangerous weapons in our facilities including anywhere that INI business is conducted, such as customer locations, trade shows, company event venues, and so forth. Any employee in possession of a firearm or other weapon or any items deemed dangerous by Independent while in our facilities/or while otherwise fulfilling job responsibilities may face disciplinary action including termination. A client or visitor who violates this policy may be removed from the property and reported to police authorities.

This policy does not apply to any law enforcement personnel, security personnel or any person engaged in military activities sponsored by the federal or state government, while engaged in their official duties.

Any potentially unsafe working conditions, safety violations or accidents on company property or involving company vehicles should be reported to safety@newszap.com and copied to inicorporate@newszap.com.  Any act of violence or threat of violence should immediately be reported to the appropriate team leaders and to inicorporate@newszap.com .

A team leader may ask any employee or visitor to immediately vacate our premises when safety is considered to be at risk. While these decisions can be reviewed later by the appropriate corporate officers, quick decisions are sometimes necessary for safety reasons.

If you believe a safety threat is immediate, you should try to remove yourself from danger as quickly as possible and warn others if you can do so without endangering yourself or others. In an emergency, use your best judgment about whether you or others should notify the police or call 911. Try to stay calm and avoid overreacting. (While we want to be cautious, we also want to avoid overreactions that could trigger tragic outcomes).
