Updated logo for Arizona group!

The Arizona group has revised its Independent Newspapers logo to reflect the new corporate name, as well as a new slogan designed to reinforce the group's image as the leader in local news coverage.

The new "Independent NewsMedia" logo continues to incorporate the "newszap.com" name as well as the new slogan: "Local News? We've Got You've Covered."

According to Bret McKeand, vice president of operations, the new slogan was chosen from nearly three dozen possible suggestions submitted by team members throughout the region.

"We felt the 'We've got you covered' slogan could be adapted to a number of different uses -- whether it was for local news in the newspaper or our online products."

The new logo was designed by Chris Williams, a member of the West Valley team.

Richard Dyer Celebrates 24 Years With INI

24 YEARS

Name: Richard H. Dyer
 
Newspapers: Apache Junction/Gold Canyon, Gilbert, Mesa and Queen Creek/San Tan Valley Independent newspapers.
 
Position: Managing editor
 
Number of years in the newspaper or printing business: 24 years. I started as a copy editor for the Apache Junction Independent on Aug. 13, 1987.
 
Job description: I do a little bit of everything here – writing, photography, copy editing, pagination, managing, backup for news services and graphics.
 
What I like best (about my job): The people I work with.
 
Most memorable moment with INI: When signs were posted on Apache Trail in Apache Junction at the beginning and end of the one-mile section from Idaho Road to Ironwood Drive showing Independent Newspapers was in the city’s adopt-a-street program.
 
Hobbies/Interests: I’m a welded-steel sculptor. A sculpture I donated to Mesa Community College was unveiled in a ceremony last October (photos are on my artist Facebook page; look for “Rick’s Welded Works”). This summer I had my first juried art show, in California, where I set out my wares for sale in a booth and explained my work to hundreds of prospective customers. I am also the volunteer production editor for The Blue Guitar arts and literary magazine, http://www.theblueguitarmagazine.org/ (my wife, Rebecca, is the volunteer editor); I do the InDesign and PhotoShop work.
 
Fun fact (about myself): My wife and I enjoy storm chasing. We saw our first tornado May 31, 2010, outside Campos, Colo. It started from a wisp in a cloud above us and ended up being recorded as an EF-2 capable of 111-135 mph winds. We followed it and a couple other tornadoes, snapping photos and recording video along the way.
 
A few facts (about myself): I am married (my wife also is a journalist, working as a copy editor for a daily newspaper). We are members of the American Copy Editors Society, http://www.copydesk.org/ . This year’s ACES conference was in Phoenix, where I presented on the small-staffs panel with two other journalists; I hope to also be part of the same seminar panel at the April 12-14, 2012, conference in New Orleans.

Book Illustrator Explains Craft To Students

Scott Taylor, an advertising representative for the Apache Junction/Gold Canyon, Mesa, Gilbert and Queen Creek/San Tan Valley Independent newspapers, spoke to Avalon Elementary students Aug. 18 on the importance of learning to read. He also explained how he illustrates children’s books. For older students later, he spoke about designing the inside cover of an espionage novel. Avalon Elementary, an Excalibur charter school, is at 1045 S. San Marcos Drive in Apache Junction. A Special Happy Birthday Wish

U.S. Senator Thomas R. Carper (D-Del) says "Happy Birthday" to a humble looking Dave Chambers after calling him to the podium on August 10th at a press event.

The Banner Receives A Sweet Thank You

On Tuesday, Aug. 16, representatives from the Antioch United Methodist Church came into The Banner’s office to thank the newspapers staff – specifically Sylvia Windsor – for helping to publicize the church’s recent Peach Festival.


The event, held Aug. 13, was the most successful peach festival to date, according to the group.

The church members said they attributed their success to The Banner.

Sylvia entered the event in the The Banner’s calendar listings for a number of weeks and then just before the event she broke out the listing in a peach colored box on the calendar page.

The group brought Sylvia a handwritten thank you card that said “Thanks for the wonderful publicity for our Peach Festival. It was a great success.”

The church also brought The Banner’s staff a basket of fresh peaches.

A Bundle of Joy for Tim Menasco

Dover Graphic Artist Tim Menasco welcomed grandchild number 3 on July 2, 2011.  Tyson Alexander Caputo weight 7 pounds, 8 ounces and is 20 inches long.  Congratulations to Tim and his family!  

L.A. Times Offspring Settles In At DSN

Graphic Artist Tim Menasco joined the Dover Graphics team in early July 2011. He was born and raised in California, about 5 miles from Disneyland. Tim was in whitewater rafting in the west for over 22 years as a guide, manager and then owner of his own rafting company for over 12 of those years with his wife. In his younger years, Tim was an avid backpacker, and today still enjoys photography, gardening and camping. Tim is married and has five children, three whom are married. Tim has three grandchildren, with the third being born just a few weeks ago on July 7. Tim has been in the publishing business for over 10 years. Seven of those years as a graphic artist and three years working in the CTP department. The newspaper business may be in Tim's blood, since his grandfather was a L.A. Times employee delivering papers to businesses and racks. Tim say's he remembers helping stuff papers with inserts as a young boy.

Florida Transplant Joins DSN

Delaware State News Ad Manager Connie Sanders joined the sales team in May 2011. She was born and raised in Pensacola, Florida. She moved to Tallahassee to attend Florida State University, where she studied Business and Studio Art. Connie moved to the Dover area in January with her husband who is stationed at Dover AFB with U.S. Air Force. She enjoys volunteering at the Airman’s Attic of Dover AFB as well as staying active with the Central Delaware Chamber of Commerce. In her spare time she loves anything art especially painting and photography. Her other interests are traveling and the great outdoors.

DSN Welcomes Catherine Hall

Delaware State News Ad Manager Catherine Hall joined the sales team in October 2010. She is a Delaware native who grew up in New Castle, went to school in Wilmington, and graduated college from Delaware State University in Dover with a Bachelors degree in Business management with a concentration in Marketing. This local “working girl” started her marketing career as a cashier at Arby’s Restaurant in Christiana Mall. She is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. and the Dover Jaycees. She is an active participant in the Central Delaware Chamber of Commerce and volunteers for the Dover Downtown Partnership. After hours, Catherine enjoys listening to music, spending many laughs with family and friends, dining out, shopping, reading, and traveling!
