Fruitful Day At The Gold Canyon Business Fair

The Apache Junction/Gold Canyon Independent was well-represented at the Gold Canyon Business Fair Jan. 4. Advertising Consultant Scott Taylor and News Editor Wendy Miller made lots of new friends and potential advertisers by introducing themselves at each of the event’s 50 vendor tables. They also took time to speak with visiting dignitaries.  In the photo below, the Independent’s logo can be seen on the screen over Scott’s shoulder. The logos rotated on-screen throughout the event. The paper followed up with a photo page, much to the delight of the vendors and guests who participated that day.

Newspaper Tube All Dressed Up

In advance of the big Thanksgiving Day edition of the Delaware State News, the newsroom had a quick brainstorming session to figure out the best way to promote it on Page 1.

Managing Editor Andy West and Photo Editor Dave Chambers got a full packet of the inserts and took a number of pictures before coming up with an idea of grabbing a Delaware State News home delivery box.

Reporter Ashton Brown agreed to serve as a hand model, placing the newspaper in the box.

To jazz up the image, we had layout team members Sheri Sussman and Debbie Devlin take some of the holiday window decorations and place around the box.

What resulted were a great page 1 teaser and a permanent window display.

After the Thanksgiving season passed, Sheri and Debbie gave it a Christmas-like display.

The layout team deserves credit for sprucing up the whole newsroom. They decorated and put up a tree and put together a snowy village scene atop a wall of filing cabinets.

“The news and layout teams, like all of the departments of the newspaper, really work hard throughout the holiday season,” said Andy. “The decorations really brighten up the newsroom and our holiday spirits.”

National News Show Cites Story On Newszap

The Rachel Maddow Show on MSNBC recently referenced a story written by Terrance Thornton that and published at arizona.newszap.com. Ms. Maddow's segment focused on the issue involving homeless veterans and the City of Phoenix's efforts to find homes for all its homeless veterans. The mayor of Phoenix was interviewed during the segment, but Ms. Maddow also referred to several stories and cited news sources in Phoenix that had covered the issue -- leading with Terrance's story (approximately three minutes into the segment). Terrance is the editor of the Town of Paradise Valley, Scottsdale and Biltmore Indepedents.
