Independent hosts candidates forum in Paradise Valley

The Town of Paradise Valley hosted a candidates forum June 23 for nine candidates seeking spots on the Town of Paradise Valley Town Council. The forum, held at the Paradise Valley Town Hall, was moderated by Editor Terrance Thornton. The town's election will be held Aug. 27. Topics of discussion touched on such issues as growth and development, taxes and public safety. The Independent will also be hosting candidates forums in July in Scottsdale and Queen Creek. During the network outage

On Wednesday, July 9^th the network was down all over the company. After many hours of waiting for Verizon to fix the cut fiber line, it was time to take matters into our own hands. Debbie Devlin and Kelsie Knight went to the local Mc Donald’s to use their FREE Wi-Fi to layout the papers and paginate classifieds.

 And they didn’t even get Fries with that!!!!

 Kudos to all who jumped in to make things happen during the outage! And, thanks to everyone for their patience during the down time, what a day!!!!

Volunteers sought for Arizona safety committee

The Arizona group is looking to bring back to life a Safety Committee and is seeking volunteers interested in assisting with the project.

The committee will meet 2 p.m. the first Tuesday of every month at Valley Newspapers. Team members from all departments, shifts and offices are encouraged to take part in the committee and its activities.

The Safety Committee will assist the company in identifying potential workplace safety hazards, and in planning, developing and implementing safety procedures.

Thanks from the Smile for Freedom 5K

 

The Delmarva Group recently received “Thanks” from the Chamber of Commerce for Greater Milford for supporting their Smile for Freedom 5K Race to benefit the Delaware Prostate Cancer Coalition and the Milford School District Cross Country Team.  The Milford Chronicle was a sponsor of the event and the Delaware State News provided prizes for the first place winners.  Sussex County Graphic Artist Angi Hicks also volunteered to help at the event.  Here’s what Executive Director of the Chamber Jo Schmeiser wrote in her email to us, “Thanks, again, for all your support for the Smile for Freedom 5K on Saturday.  It was a wonderful event that was very well received for the first time on Saturday in June.  We had 120 participants. Sussex County Post Donates to New Library

The new $3.1 million Greenwood Public Library, which opened June 24 on Mill Street in the heart of downtown Greenwood, is nearly triple the size of the old branch library. Though the shelves are well stocked with more than 32,000 print and audio books, DVDs and other media, the Friends of the Greenwood Library acknowledge there are yet a few more items needed to make the facility complete. With the help of 14 local advertisers, Jenny Keim (r), a marketing consultant with the Sussex County Post, put together a congratulatory promotion that ran recently in the newspaper. A part of the proceeds from advertising sales were donated to the library. Catharine Kramer (l), a member of the Friends of the Library, accepts the donation.
