How times have changed!
From the 5/18/11 issue of the Dorchester Banner:
After reading a recent Laurel (DE.) Star columnist relate how his first job in the news business “started out with a news¬paper route which became living hell on a bicycle,” I recall how my experiences were 100 percent opposite. Of course at age 80, my memories reflect another time in another world — at the end of the Great Depression and the start of World War II. At age 10, I made $4 working for a tailor 20 hours per week.
By age 12, I started carrying newspa¬pers — 537 papers six afternoons a week of The Daily Banner in Cambridge, plus morning papers and Sunday papers from the metropolitan cities of Baltimore, Wash¬ington, Philadelphia and New York — all on my bicycle except Sundays. Then, 1943-’48, the daily paper was 3 cents, 18 cents per week, of which the carriers paid 12 cents, kept the rest. And-in fi ve years; I only recall one person who never paid — that was a gentleman in an aged home, who I let go on the 18 cents weekly for 25 weeks when he died owing me $4.50 — the only time I ever remember losing any money on my paper routes.
I saved enough money from my paper routes to pay $1,800 cash for a new 1950 Pontiac; got married, paid $8,900 for our first home; did everything in the news¬paper except run the press; was Banner sports editor and assistant news editor 10 years; also two years (1960-’62) with The Daily Times — and it all started as a news¬paper carrier; which was a terrific learning experience.
We started the first of a chain of 22 coin- operated laundries in six counties on Delmarva 52 years ago; 51 years ago went to Ocean City, built and operated two res¬taurants, later a condo complex; and in Salisbury the Court Plaza shopping and recreation complex, which had the largest privately owned sports center on Delmarva until we sold it 11 years ago; at which time on a 42-acre cornfield, we developed and operated a horse training facility on State Line Road (Mason-Dixon Line) east of Del¬mar, Del. And it was all the result of my days as a delivery boy of daily papers, learning about business and meeting great people 65 to 70 years ago — among the best days of my life! Times sure have changed!

Independent Takes Golden Opportunity
The Town of Paradise Valley Independent this week published a Golden Anniversary commemorative booklet in recognition of the 50th anniversary of the incorporation of the Town of Paradise Valley. The 32-page book featured a four-page glossy cover and was mailed along with the May 25th edition of the newspaper.
Interest was strong from readers and advertisers. The town had in the past published its own anniversary publications, but severe budget constraints prohibited the town this year from spending public funds on any sort of a celebration.
The Independent stepped in and published its own 50th anniversary book, much to the delight of town officials and residents. The newspaper staff worked closely with the Paradise Valley Historical Association and other residents anxious to celebrate the milestone.
The booklet contained a number of stories and photographs put together by the staff, as well as historical information and photographs from the town's archives provided by the historical committee.
The editorial team responsible for the project included Dan Quigley and Bret McKeand, while advertising consultants Brian Keller and Jan McKinney put together more than 16 pages of paid advertising. Mary Carrier was responsible for ad production and the cover design.

Janet Levy is a grandmother (again!).
Brooklyn Elizabeth Dennis was born at 5:00pm on May 13, 2011.
She weighed 7lbs. 15oz. and was 21.5 inches long.

It was a pleasure meeting you in person last Friday, May 6th, at the Carlisle Fire Company. Unfortunately things were rather busy during the Salute to the Greatest Generation which prevented us from chatting longer.
I want to express thanks to you on behalf of myself, Glenn Watson and the other members of the Delaware National Guard Retired Officer's Association (DNGROA) for your coverage of the Carlisle Fire Company May 6, 2011 event honoring the Greatest Generation. Your efforts are responsible for such a well attended and successful day. It was wonderful to have approximately 30 WWII veterans in attendance plus many of their families and others. Milford's Wilkins family as well as Mr Giambrone and family of Norristown, PA were quite proud and moved.
Our collective view is that you made an important and clear difference in the effort of honoring our World War II veterans. Thank you.

Reason to Celebrate
The Delaware State News Telemarketing Team and Graphics Team gathered together recently to enjoy a catered lunch of Italian sandwiches, sparkling drinks and confetti-sprinkled cup cakes. Why? They were celebrating their awards in the Maryland, Delaware, D.C. Press Association 2010 Advertising Contest.
In addition, Graphic Artist Cyndy Paquette and Promotions Manager Heather Cregar received a second place award in the “Use of Humor” category for daily newspapers under 35,000 circulation. This was for the “eye-catching” testimonial ad featuring an eye-popping photo of Dover business owner Gary Knox.
Everyone was pleased to receive a “congratulations” from not only President Ed Dulin, but also a special note from our founder Jack Smyth (see photo).

Editorial Celebration at Delaware State News
The newsroom of the Delaware State News took a break from the action on May 4 to celebrate some great accomplishments.
The highlight of the celebration was the presentation of a special award to Sports Editor Andy Walter, who recently marked his 25th anniversary with the newspaper.
The newsroom also took time to present Maryland-Delaware-D.C. Press Association awards to the staff for a second place award for the December series “Gang Presence, Gang Problem.”

Special Cover For Dover Days
The Delaware State News used the occasion of Dover Days for a wraparound cover, the first of its kind for the compact newspaper.
Featured on the cover was a scene from the encampment of the 2nd Delaware Regiment Volunteers, a Civil War reenactment group.
Photo Editor Dave Chambers snapped the photo of Capt. Glenn Layton and his men the evening before the Saturday edition hit the streets.
Graphic designer Jamie Fritchman provided the InDesign expertise to arrange the headlines and other elements on the special front.
Reaction from the community was very positive.
In an email to Chris Flood, Capt. Layton – who was featured in a story inside the cover – wrote: “The Saturday news article was very well written and I've received a lot of positive comments. Thank you for taking the time and interest. Please extend my thanks to Dave Chambers for his outstanding photo for the wraparound project. I know a lot of extra papers were sold due to the photo of the 2nd Delaware camp at Dover Days. I hope the news staff were as pleased as we were with the Saturday paper. I am humbled by the featured article but do greatly appreciate you including the 2nd Delaware.”
The nation is observing the 150th anniversary of the Civil War.
