One of the Caloosa Belle’s most effective advertising
campaigns is also a community mission. As with so many communities throughout
the country, unwanted and stray pets are a serious problem in the LaBelle area.
Periodically, the CB offers a full page sig ad which highlights some of the
most “unadoptable” little critters at the Caloosa Humane Society with their
picture and a few lines of information on them. The promotion is very popular
and, in addition to highlighting a serious community problem and giving the
CB’s bottom line a little boost, it always helps get some very deserving dogs
and cats a forever home - and $10 of the cost of each ad on the page goes to
the humane society. The promotion is so popular that people actually cut out
the photo of the dog or cat they want to adopt and bring it to the humane
society. Recently, Publisher Patty Brant presented a check for $220 to Humane
Society Director Alex DeStefano. We plan to run the promotion again in October.
(By the way, this is Greta, a two-year-old pit mix - a new arrival at the
humane society at the time of the photo.)

Star Wars Alive And Well In Arizona
The Force was with the INI West Valley office, if not with
the Arizona Diamondbacks, as several West Valley office employees and their
guests enjoyed Star Wars night at the ballpark July 18. The Diamondbacks lost
the game 8-4 to the San Francisco Giants, but there was plenty of fun to be
had, including Greg Garcia dressed up as Yoda, storm troopers trying to stop
the Legends Race, and those who came early enough got to take home an A.J.
Pollack Star Wars bobblehead.

Diana Whitehall Retires
Okeechobee
News ad consultant Diana Whitehall retired June 15, with plans to travel, spend
time with family and take up new hobbies. The Okeechobee News staff managed to
surprise her with a going away luncheon. (She was told an advertising staff
meeting was scheduled for 11:30 a.m.) In addition to the good wishes from the
staff, Diana received a gift certificate for a spa day and a beach bag filled
with supplies for the seashore. Tom Byrd was part of the fun by prerecording a
good-bye message that was played for Diana at the party.

"Town in
shock Diana is retiring" read the headline on the mock front page adorning
a special cake at Diana Whitehall's retirement party at the Okeechobee News.

Congratulations Salisbury Independent On 1 Year
Maryland state Comptroller Peter Franchot -- the state's
tax collector and top business cheerleader -- paid a visit to Salisbury and the
Salisbury Independent to present a proclamation to the staff, recognizing the
weekly newspaper on its one-year anniversary. Also participating in the visit
were the community's three representatives in the state's General Assembly.
Salisbury Independent is a free, local publication
distributed weekly to 20,000 readers; it celebrated a year of publication in
mid-May.
On hand to accept Franchot's proclamation and compliments
were, from left:
photographer Tony Weeg, Publisher Darel La Prade,
Comptroller Franchot, Editor Greg Bassett, state Delegate Carl Anderton, state
Delegate Sheree Sample-Hughes, state Delegate Mary Beth Carozza, Advertising
Sales Consultant Cathy Koyanagi and Reporter Susan Canfora. The Independent
published its 60th consecutive edition July 2.
Marvelous things in Milford
Milford Chronicle Community Editor Logan Anderson made an
appearance in early May at the “Girls Night Out” event featuring the “Marvelous
Men of Milford.” This event is put on by the Milford Chamber of Commerce
and the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition. Local men help raise money to
benefit both of the organizations by wearing interesting costumes and
performing crazy stunts at the event. In true newsworthy fashion, Logan
dressed as Clark Kent AKA Superman and spent the evening collecting donations
and dancing. Newshound was also on hand to participate in the “Marvelous
Mascots” competition… sadly beaten out by a lion that could do
cartwheels. Really?!?! Cartwheels or not… Newshound was the best in
the Conga Line. Delmarva Graphic Artist Angi Hicks was a committee
volunteer for the event, and Telemarketing Consultant Bonnie Mankin and Ad
Managers Katrina Sullivan and Samantha Hemphill joined in the “Night Out” festivities
to show their support for Logan and Newshound. Both the Milford Chronicle
and the Delaware State News sponsored this event which raised more than
$10,000.

Another Grandbaby for Tim!
With the recent addition of grandchild number 11, Delaware
State News Graphic Artist Menasco can now say that he owns a football
team. Emmaline Mae Menasco was born July 6 at 8:36 PM PST. She is
20.5 inches long and 8 lb., 9 oz. Plus, she has the same face as her
father does when a customer makes too many changes to their ads!
Congratulation to Tim and his family on their beautiful new addition!
Chamber of Commerce Excellence Awards Dinner
A few weeks ago, Delaware State News Publisher Tom Byrd
graduated from the Central Delaware Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Central
Delaware program. This 10-month long program is designed to prepare the
leaders of tomorrow with the information, knowledge and resources they need to
make Kent County a better place to live and work. Tom received a certificate
and LCD pin from Chamber Marketing Directory JR Ennis at the CDCC Excellence
Awards Dinner. Past graduates of the program include Delaware State News
Managing Editor Andy West and Delaware State News Advertising Manager Katrina
Sullivan. Katrina’s LCD class won the “Best Class” trophy at this year’s
dinner.

Anniversary Celebrations in Dover
CEO Ed Dulin was recently surprised during a Delaware State
News Team Leader meeting when he was presented with a special gift in
celebration of his 45th Anniversary with INI. In addition to
the DSN Team Leaders, Delaware Printing Company GM Tom Bugbee, and Lori Kircher
and Wanda Ford-Waring from INI Corporate joined the celebration. Ed
received a silver engraved picture frame and a gift certificate for dinner to a
favorite local restaurant. Congratulations to Ed on his
anniversary! Just 5 more years and he’ll get a Porsche!
Congratulations to Delaware State News Graphic Artist Lee
Hoover who celebrated her 5th anniversary with the company in
June. Lee showed up in the Dover conference room expecting an unplanned
meeting with her Team Leader but instead was greeted by “Surprise” shouts from
her team mates in Graphics and Advertising Support. Everyone enjoyed a
nice lunch break including subs and neon-iced cupcakes. Lee received an
INI tote bag and a gift certificate to a local gift shop. Congratulations
Lee!

Searching for INI's Future Leaders
By Ed Dulin
After forty five years with the company and just one full year in the CEO role, it's made me sit back and give some hard thought to the future of our organization.
After forty five years with the company and just one full year in the CEO role, it's made me sit back and give some hard thought to the future of our organization.
When I started
with the company all those years ago, it was an exciting time and I was anxious
to learn all I could about the industry and the various departments. In
addition to my daytime responsibilities, I would volunteer at night to cover
high school sporting events and carry around a camera wherever I went just in
case something happened. (It was a lot more difficult then than today
with cell phones with built-in digital cameras. Not only
would we need to get the settings right on the bulky camera, but it also
required many more hours processing the actual film and developing
the hard-copy photos in a dark room.)
Whatever I
couldn't learn by working hands-on in the different departments, I tried to
consume by utilizing the INI library, taking courses and attending
seminars. If you haven't had the chance to look through the library
materials, I strongly encourage you to do that, as there are lots of great
books and videos. Of course, not every single one of them is terrific,
but I've always felt if you learn just one thing from each book you read,
it'll add to your deep list of strengths and ability to pursue
greatness. There are also a ton of webinars available today as well,
many of which are totally free.
But, this column
isn't about me....it's about the search for tomorrow's leaders!
One of my highest
priorities as CEO is to recognize and develop a pathway for our future managers
to continue their learning and leadership skills. Of course, it is up to
them to take the initiative to excel in their current job and seize the
opportunity for the continued learning if made available.
The newspaper
industry has changed a lot from forty-five years ago, but I still believe the
future can be just as exciting with all of the technology advancements and
different platforms for delivering the local news and advertising we
produce. We will need strong and well-informed managers to recognize
those opportunities and seize them through well-coordinated team efforts.
Are you one of
INI's future leaders? If so, let us know so we can discuss your career
path more. Either talk to your supervisor or email me at edulin@newszap.com

Newsmedia Inc. USA)
Okeechobee News Staffer Joins City's Historical Scavenger Hunt
By Tammi Kelly
Okeechobee News
Okeechobee started its centennial year off with a bang in the park and soon to follow a competition that would last 100 days from the beginning of January until June 12. Forty-seven teams signed up to compete in a scavenger hunt that would take place all over Okeechobee. Little did they know exactly what they had gotten into.
The rules were simple, look for the clue on the city’s Facebook page, go with at least one of your team mates and your team sign/number to take a photo at the answer, then post it to the Facebook page with a hashtag of #Okeechobee100.
The team that got there the fastest and answered correctly got the most points. As the game began the turn out was huge/ Teams were bumping into each other at locations but for a competition it was more for fun that who is winning. As time went on the questions got harder and the teams became more creative with their posts. The “selfie” got a new meaning in this game. At the end of the game some questions were based on trivia and did not need an photo which came in handy on those hurricane like days outside.
Some of the places the teams visited included the old bank, Lock 7, the old drive-in movie theater, the Wooden Jungle playground, and the old Raulerson home.
My team was the Top of the Lake Gang, we finished tenth out of 47 teams. My team mates were Vanessa and Selena Bowman.
My team mates didn’t know much about their hometown but after this they never realized how much history there was to really hunt down here in Okeechobee.
