Welcome to Peterline Hall

Peterline joins INI in the West Valley office as a customer service representative.

My name is Peterline Hall, I was born in Accra, Ghana and moved to the U.S. in 2007. When I first came to the U.S. I lived and grew up in New Jersey; a little town called Hamilton where everyone knew each other… you know like one of those towns in the movies. Moving to the U.S. was a big change for me because everyone and everything I knew was back home; the only reason my mom and I came was because my dad and sibling were here. I lived in jersey for 10 years when one day my mom decided she no longer wanted to wake up in the morning after it snows to shovel snow and that’s how I found my self here (AZ) in 2017.

Ever since I moved here I’ve been readjusting and changing the American dream which to me is to be happy and content living a peaceful life. I’ve worked at Walmart where I started off as a cashier then cashiering to pushing carts and possibly anything Walmart needed done really. I then worked at target and I loved it but I couldn’t stay because it was seasonal and I moved to NC for college. I attended NCA&T University and I was a chem major. While in North Carolina, I worked at a restaurant called Bonefish Grill where I was a host and I loved it… The people I worked with and most of the customers were lovely and I miss them. After a semester at college I found myself back home because college wasn’t what I thought it would be or maybe Covid had some effects to it but I was home sick.

As I began to readjust back to life as I knew it I started working at realtor.com. You ever filled out a form for a place you liked on line and received a million calls a day about your inquiry? Well yes, I was one of those annoying people getting paid to call you. I loved working there but I needed something different where I could be in person and talk to people and help them cause that’s what I like to do. Now I find myself working at Dillards as a shoe sales associate. My favorite part about this job is the competition with the other girls to get the most customers. When I’m not at work I use my free time to travel, draw, take picture, and work on my home work for business school and real estate school. In the next 6 months if you’re looking for a home or some shoes, remember Peterline’s gotcha back.

Letter of thanks for coverage on Homelessness

Hi Melissa,

I sent an email on the website but was not sure it got through.

Anyway, I wanted to compliment you on the article you did on homelessness. The article may have been the best I have read on the homeless issue in Scottsdale. The article was filled with fascinating personal stories, hopeful support and planning efforts, and all written in a very professional journalistic style. Well done!

I will continue to watch for your work.

Here is a link to the story as well: https://www.yourvalley.net/scottsdale-independent/stories/the-homeless-problem-whos-on-the-streets-what-scottsdale-is-doing-to-help,298639

The lead story for Scottsdale Independent takes a look at the growing number of homeless people in Scottsdale and new initiatives that are trying to help people get back on their feet. The 2022 Point In Time count shows there are more than 100 homeless people in Scottsdale. One of those people is a licensed contractor with decades of experience – his rent went up nearly $1,000 last year, and he was given a 30-day notice. When he couldn’t meet the new rent price, he lost his housing. With more and more people finding themselves in-need, Scottsdale has partnered with Phoenix Rescue Mission to give people day-work.

Florida Mission Stories March 2022

Reporting from the field ...

INI Florida Group Editor Katrina Elsken reports from the field ... literally. Katrina recently visited a project which turns invasive plants from Lake Okeechobee into soil amendments which can be sprayed on nearby pastureland.

 Reservoir construction delayed

Near LaBelle, a massive reservoir project is underway to store water from the Caloosahatchee River during the wet season for release during the dry season when more water is needed. The 10,000 acre reservoir will hold water 15 to 25 feet deep.  At the March meeting of the South Florida Water Management District, it was revealed this project is many months behind schedule, and falling even further behind schedule. This has the SFWMD governing board wondering if they made a mistake choosing the low bidder for the more than half a billion dollar contact.

Plan for managing Lake O draws debate

The Lake Okeechobee System Operating Manual (LOSOM), which will go into effect when repairs to the Herbert Hoover Dike are complete later this year, continues to be a subject of debate in the Lake O area communities. As it is currently written, LOSOM would allow much higher lake levels, which could be devastating to the lake’s ecology.

Okeechobee football player in NFL draft

In Sports, the Lake Okeechobee News has been following the career of local football player Evan Neal, who is expected to be a first round pic in the NFL draft. The community is so excited about the young man’s future they are holding a “watch party” at the Agri-Civic Center.

Salisbury Independent Mission story March 2022

https://baytobaynews.com/stories/seafood-houses-desperately-seek-relief-on-guest-worker-visas,73121?

It’s crucial that the newspapers in our Delmarva group join forces whenever possible to deliver authoritative news stories of wide-ranging interest. When an alliance of seafood packing houses held a news conference to talk about a desperate need for immigration de-regulation to fill work positions, deadlines, conflicting news stories and the news event’s remote location made day-of coverage impossible. Cambridge-Dorchester stringer Debra Messick bounced back with a deeply reported and wholly enlightening story that served readers of all three Maryland weeklies. Here in Salisbury, interest in the issue is high, as restaurants and seafood distributors are reliant on these packing houses and their production. Debra’s story was better than any of the shallow dog-and-pony show coverage of our competitors. Readers responded with notice and appreciation.

Crisfield-Somerset County Times Mission story March 2022

Until 1996 Somerset County was the only county in Maryland that did not have an 18-hole golf course. Every year since then Great Hope Golf Course has lost money with the taxpayers covering the red ink. While the county’s financial audit was favorable overall (and reported separately), buried in it were the results of golf course operations which are extracted for this simple fact-based story which frankly the public has come to expect year after year.

Delaware State News Mission stories March 2022

Our mission story this month is our team coverage of the 60th anniversary of the Storm of 1962.

Anniversary stories must recap the historic event, but also find angles to make the news new. Our team coverage did that!  Kudos to reporters Joe Edelen, Mike Finney, Rachel Sawicki and Glenn Rolfe.

Stories over the weekend focused on memories from those who witnessed the three-day nor’easter firsthand decades ago to experts urging action to address climate change and prevent severe damage from future storms and officials outlining the need for emergency preparation. Another story looked at how the storm, which destroyed miles of oceanfront homes and killed seven people in Delaware, set beach replenishment in motion. A breakout box from our 50th anniversary coverage was updated to reflect storms of record through the last 60 years. (As residents of this coastal state, that’s not a list we like to see grow!)

The coverage had a great tie-in with the Opinion section each day. In the days prior to the anniversary, Opinion Coordinator Lee Hoover ran the Question of the Day to solicit memories from those who witnessed the storm. That lead to colorful, personal letters on the subject, many with photos, for the days surrounding the anniversary.

Brooke Schultz’s online presentation of the stories and photo galleries was excellent! We had then-and-now photos of heavily damaged and flooded areas, historic images (some just released to the public given the anniversary), documents from the governor’s addresses at the time and our original storm section, published in the days after the historic Ash Wednesday storm struck.

We dedicated many pages in the Sunday paper to the historic images and then-and-now comparisons. (Layout thanks to Darin Powell.)

The newsroom was happy to hear Yvonne Kirksey relay some immediate feedback during our staff meeting the week that the coverage published: Yvonne took a call from Mrs. Jester after she read the Monday, March 7 edition and saw one of the Delaware Public Archives images we published.

There, she found a picture of her father’s house, the Everett Johnson property that had floated three miles from its original location to land in the marsh near the Slaughter and Cedar creeks. “She was really thrilled to see it because she never saw the image until we ran it!” Yvonne shared the image with Mrs. Jester. 😊

Banner Mission story March 2022

Banner Mission story

The Cambridge- South Dorchester High School 2022 senior class play “Into the Woods” is a great example in March of our mission. The story and captivating photo by Dave Ryan grabbed readers as the front page of the March 30 issue. (Kudos to Lena Ellwanger for a creative layout that allowed for many of Dave’s photos and student faces in limited print space.)

This story has a lot of elements: Tremendous volunteer support in all aspects, such as in producing costumes and sets. Families make adjustments to their schedules to get the kids to and from practice for a couple of months. An amazing amount of advertising support in the play's printed program, and not least of all, excellent attendance at five shows over the weekend.

The Banner supports that effort with front-page coverage, actually for North Dorchester's play also, because it's a community-wide project that means a lot to people. I mean, let's face it, this isn't exactly a cultural hotspot, but folks really turn out for these productions. In keeping with the Banner's goal of recognizing those who are excited about being active in the community, we include a full list of names, with the cast, crew, and top donors, to show how at INI we value our readers as neighbors and contributors to local causes. I think this kind of coverage helps to distinguish our product from the competitors. We give it the prominence it deserves, while highlighting all those who participate, not only the stars of the show.

As we’ve seen, in a world of bad news, good news is always welcome.
