No summer slowdown at Valley Newspapers!
Expansion and renovation work at Valley Newspapers continues this summer at a hectic pace. Five new press towers were installed in July and are now fully operational. Workers have now turned their attention to installing a new automated inserting machine, which is expected to be fully operational by the end of August. The additional equipment is all part of the plant’s highly anticipated plans to begin printing the west-coast edition of the Wall Street Journal beginning this October.

Thanks to Andy West and the DSN Teams for the flowers sent to my mother’s service. She loved flowers and I wanted her to have “bunches” which she did. Thanks to Andy West and Craig Horleman for dealing with my erratic schedule for those 5 weeks when she was hospitalized. Thanks to Sheri Sussman for not knowing what days she would have off or when I would need to leave suddenly and have her “hold down the fort”. Also for stopping by my house and bringing “frozen desserts” which got me thru the hot stressful nights. Special thanks to Janet Levy who every day for 5 weeks never missed asking me how my mother was doing, how I was doing and if I needed anything. You allowed me to vent to you every day – sometimes good, sometimes not. You seemed to be passing my desk at just the right times. Thanks to everyone that attended the viewing & funeral, sent cards, sent flowers and showed concern and compassion.

New Plan Year Begins August 1, 2011 with Lower Premiums
Medical costs are increasing nationally. In an effort to contain costs, the company’s insurance committee recommended a change of the Health Plan’s design as well as an increase in the company’s share of the costs from 60% to 65%. (This means that plan participants will pay 35% of the plan costs instead of 40%.)
The medical plan changes from the traditional PPO that includes both in and out of network medical services to IN-NETWORK only. There are no “out-of-network” benefits with the new plan. Participants of the plan will be able to access In-Network PPO providers anywhere in the nation. The Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association's website, http://provider.bcbs.com/ provides online access to the most current listing of providers. According to our health plan charges, nearly all plan participants utilize in-network doctors and medical facilities already.
The in-network plan design changes includes the following: a) The upfront Plan Year deductibles are $500 for individual coverage and $1,500 for family coverage, b) After the plan year deductible and any applicable co-payment is met, this plan pays 80% until the coinsurance expense limit of $2,000 per individual ($6,000 per family) is reached. c) All office visits for primary and specialist are $30, d) Chiropractors charges become part of the upfront deductible
The regular premium for medical and prescription coverage will be $106.04 per person per pay period (down from $116.60). The premium reflects a 20% smoking surcharge. The premium will be $88.37 per person per pay for those who qualify for the tobacco-free discount (down from $106.00).
∙ The premium for the optional Dental plan will decrease from $11.50 to $10 per person per pay period.
∙ The premium for the optional voluntary life insurance is age banded. Spousal Life Insurance varies by age; not dependent life insurance. For dependent children, there are only 3 selections. Costs remain unchanged.
∙ The premium for the optional long term disability remains unchanged at $0.320 per $100 of covered payroll per month.
∙ The waiting period for short term disability changes from three months to a year. This change is effective for new hires as of August 1, 2011.
We want to encourage all of our employees and their dependents to be as healthy as they can be. The in-network health plan will also help employees become better health care consumers since there is greater exposure to higher deductibles and higher out-of-pocket expenses.
We also encourage you to schedule your annual physical and follow the preventive guidelines based on your age and gender. This is a valuable preventive care benefit! That is why these benefits remain covered at 100% and NO deductible.
Open Enrollment for employees who wish to sign up for benefits or change their benefits will run from July 17 – 23, 2011.
