Garcia Receives Member of the Year Award

National Accounts Coordinator Gregory Garcia received the Member of the Year from the Surprise Regional Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Garcia volunteers on the chamber’s breakfast committee, as well as takes the lead on the chamber’s “Can’t Miss Mixers” each month. He also serves on the Adelante Health Care board and recently joined the Salvation Army board. His wife, Amanda, participated in the celebration.

A Night Out

Independent Newsmedia in Arizona co-sponsored a "Dinner on the Diamond" event Feb. 15 at the Peoria Sports Complex in Peoria, Arizona. The event served to kick off the Cactus League spring training season in Peoria, and was a fundraiser for both the Peoria Chamber of Commerce and Peoria Diamond Club. Publisher Charlene Patti Bisson served on the event's planning committee.

Bret McKeand, president, and West Valley staffers Charlene Bisson, publisher; Chris Williams, graphics; and Rusty Bradshaw, news editor, enjoyed a night out at the Dinner on the Diamond Casino Night at the Peoria Sports Complex Feb. 15.

The dinner, hosted by the Peoria Chamber of Commerce and Peoria Diamond Club, was initiated last year and the casino night was added to this year’s event.

 

Newshound Enjoys The Sun

Newshound, the mascot of the Okeechobee News, visited the Top of the Lake Art Festival in Flagler Park in downtown Okeechobee, Florida on Saturday. The pup with the "nose for news" found plenty of new friends at the Okeechobee Main Street Puppy Pageant. He took time out to pose for photos with contestants.

 

Dorchester Banner Hometown Heroes Winners Announced

CAMBRIDGE — In September 2012, to kick off The Banner’s 115th anniversary celebration, we asked readers to help us recognize some of our hometown heroes.

For more than a century, The Banner’s mission has been to educate and celebrate the Heart of Chesapeake Country, and to fulfill that mission, we have published countless stories about the people that make this community what it is. But we know there are more stories out there. People that haven’t received the recognition they may deserve — unsung heroes.

We got a great response.

Many of the stories associated with the nominations were very moving.

The nominee could have been a neighbor who organizes a benefit for a family having financial troubles or someone who helps in an emergency — anyone who goes above and beyond to help others or overcome obstacles.

There were eight categories:

• Community — A person who has donated their time or has done something to improve the community.

• Business — An organization or group of people who have undertaken a project to help others.

• Mentor/Coach — A person who has made a dramatic impact in the life of another.

• Emergency Responder — A person who steps forward during an emergency to help.

• Faith/Spiritual — A person who makes an impact in their church or the religious community.

• Youth — A younger member of the community who has found a special way to brighten the day of others.

• Educator — A teacher, current or retired, who has found ways to inspire students beyond their own expectations.

• Lifetime achievement — A long-standing community member who has consistently and tirelessly stepped forward and exemplified a passion for giving.

All the nominees are currently being honored The Banner’s website — Maryland.Newszap.com on the Cambridge/Dorchester Hometown Heroes page.

A small, independent committee of community leaders reviewed the nominations and selected a superhero for each category along with two runners up. Those winners are featured in this special publication.

The superheroes also received an award created by Cambridge-based Crystal Prints. 

It is our hope to continue and grow this effort each year.

The Latest Edition of the Kent County Profile Is Available

The latest edition of the Kent County Profile is out.

The staff of the Delaware State News hosted a breakfast for the unveiling and series of short presentations regarding economic progress in the area Tuesday, Jan. 29, at the Dover Public Library.

The Kent County Profile is an annual economic development glossy publication, a collaborative effort of the Delaware State News and Kent Economic Partnership.

Walter is Honored as Exemplary Mentor

DOVER – Delaware State News Sports Editor Andy Walter was honored as an “exemplary mentor” in January at the annual Delaware Mentoring Summit in Dover.

Walter of Dover received one of the Exemplary Mentor awards for his seven years of mentoring at both William Henry Middle School and North Dover Elementary School from Connecting Generations' creative mentoring program director Rachel Markowitz Wednesday afternoon inside the Dover Sheraton.
