State News 60th Anniversary Edition

 

DOVER — On Sept. 14, 1953, Jack Smyth delivered the first daily issue of the Delaware State News.

In doing so, Dover became the last capital city in the nation to have a daily news­paper.

Ever since, the Delaware State News has lived up to an inadver­tent promise written on Page 1 that day — “Con­tinued To­morrow.”

Hours late, city editor Jim Miller told a pressman to cut short a story on Kent General Hospital that didn’t fit and put those words below it.

The rest of the story, as promised, appeared the next day — and so did the newspaper.

“These two words should be en­graved, indelibly, in the archives of the Delaware State News,” Mr. Miller later wrote.

In the 60th anniversary edition, the Delaware State News reflects on its colorful past and its ongoing work as an in­dependent newspaper.

Arizona Staffs Capture Press Association Honors

Three of Arizona's weekly newspapers will receive editorial and advertising awards at this year's "Better Newspapers Contest" hosted later this month by the Arizona Newspapers Association.

Although the exact finishes won't be announced until Sept. 14, winning newspapers have been notified that they will be receiving awards in specific categories. Arizona newspapers and team members receiving awards include:

* North Valley Editor Terrance Thornton will receive five awards in individual writing categories, including Best News Story, Best Sustained Coverage or Series and Investigative Reporting.

* Surprise Independent Editor Jeff Grant will receive awards in the Enterprise Reporting category and for Best Feature Photo Layout.

* The Town of Paradise Valley Independent will be honored in the Best Classified Section category.

* Scott Taylor and Deb Crotzer of the Apache Junction/Gold Canyon Independent will receive an award in the Best Paid Ad Series (Black and White) category.

Banner’s Community Event Sets Example For Other Newspapers

As part of a promotion associated with “Batten Down: A Guide to Emergency Preparedness,” a recent special section published by the Dorchester Banner, the newspaper sponsored a community-wide event to help disseminate information on how to prepare pets for an oncoming hurricane.

Held on the banks of the Choptank River, the event, which is detailed here,  enjoyed the support of the Dorchester County Emergency Management Services.

The reception of the Banner’s outreach was extremely positive, and as word has spread, other counties in the state are now working with their own local newspapers to do something similar.
