Support For Our Troops

The Classified Department in Dover, DE took up a collection to send a gift box to Classified Ad Rep. Courtney Hartline’s husband, Spenser and his Unit who are deployed to Qatar.  Through the generous donations of the INI employees we were able to put together 3 boxes of goodies including snacks and candy,  Toiletries including toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, sunscreen, body wash, detergent, etc., we also received Frisbees, playing cards and other games, Stationery, envelopes, pens, and so much more. We want to take this time to Thank everyone who contributed to this show of support for Spenser and his fellow Airmen.  We appreciate your kindness and we know they will too.

The Small Business Administration and the Phoenix chapter of SCORE held it’s first SCORE Small Business Symposium Aug. 15 at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix. The day-long event attracted over 500 Valley businesses and featured a number of talks and seminars designed to help small business owners. The Independent was one of the major sponsors of the event and provided printing of the day's program. The company's logo was prominently displayed at the theater's main entrance, and Jan McKinney, a sales consultant with the group's North Valley newspapers, joined Arizona President Bret McKeand by staffing a booth during the event.

DSN Reporter Interviews World Famous Doctor

Delaware State News reporter Jen Rini interviews Dr. Ben Carson at the Rollins Center, Dover Downs, on Aug. 10.

Dr. Benjamin Carson, guest of the Delaware chapter of the Frederick Douglass Foundation of Delaware, grew up in a single parent home challenged by dire poverty.

Because of the efforts of his mother, he overcame poor grades, a horrible temper and low self-esteem.  His mother, with only a third-grade education, challenged her sons to strive for excellence. He persevered and rose to become a full professor of neurosurgery, oncology, plastic surgery and pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, where he has directed pediatric neurosurgery at the Johns Hopkins Children's Center for more than a quarter century.

His accomplishments include the first and only successful separation of Siamese twins joined at the back of the head in 1987, and the first completely successful separation of type-2 vertical Siamese twins in 1997 in South Africa.

 

Where Eagles Dare

Hey Glenn,

Just read the article you did on bald eagles, EXCELLENT!

I wish everybody felt the same way about a national treasure as you and I. A few months ago my wife and I road by a field NW of Greenwood, and were astonished to the sight of 15-20+ bald eagles in the field together! I mentioned this to a fellow poultry farmer that lives near there and he said he has seen more then that at the same location on a regular occasion! What he said next was appalling!

One day he and his wife rode by there and there were 20-30+/-  in the field, so he called WBOC TV and mentioned that they should do a story or send someone out, and the response was "we don't have time to do anything on that right now"!

That's sad, especially after the pix and detailed article you did! GOOD JOB, and incase you are interested, the field is at the NW corner of Greenwood rd & Nine foot road, (just west of Chormans Airport). I'm sure if you don't see what we have, the locals and people that live there can back my statement up, as I have heard this from several people that frequent the area .

Banner Editor Takes Steps To Help Save Lives

Dorchester Banner Editor Logan B. Anderson received this note from John Winslow, Dorchester County Addictions Program director, about a story highlighting local health officials’ response to growing concerns about prescription and nonprescription and opiate use.

The story appeared in the Aug. 7 edition of The Banner with a story about the arrest of a suspected drug dealer in connection to the overdose death of a 17-year-old. Independent Extends Period for Employees

Independent’s insurance committee has heard the ongoing concerns by employees due to the increase in dependent rates; and, small window for open enrollment. Many are saying the open enrollment period did not allow enough time for researching alternate plans for dependent coverage. After consultation with Independent’s broker, we are extending that period to August 23  that will allow you time to research other plans and make final adjustments to your selection.

We will be closing off any requests for changes on August 24.  Any changes thereafter would only be allowed due to a qualified life event.  Keep in mind that the extended period will not stop the new premium rates that go into effect August 1; which you will see on your next August paycheck.   We hope this extended period will give employees time to research plan options. Angi Saves The Day and The Ad

I would like to give kudos and a well-deserved BUD to Angi Hicks.

This week she had a Monday morning she was probably not ready for, but she tackled it with class, as she always does.

First off, Gigante, a local grocery store and full-page advertiser in the Milford Chronicle, missed the deadline for sending ad copy for this week’s paper. My contact wouldn’t return calls or emails. So I figured it was just going to be one of those weeks like we usually have with them. Then on Sunday, I received through email a huge EPS file that I couldn’t open.

When I asked about the ad Monday morning, the client told me they planned to do all the ad layout from now on. I ordered a late ad, but I asked for a jpeg or pdf. Late as can be, we finally received the jpeg and almost every fruit in the ad was misspelled! Along with the store’s disclaimer on the bottom of the ad.

We could not let this ad run as it was. Not only would it be a bad reflection on Gigante, but on the paper as well.

At this late hour, Angi jumped in and pulled all the wrong info out of the ad and corrected it, finishing just as the ad was due to be sent to the printing company. Gigante was told about the mistakes, and eventually sent a new ad, in the incorrect EPS format once again.

So I want to take this time to thank Angi for putting up with me as well as Gigante. I cannot say, however, that she is not used to it by now. J
