Page 1 story got their attention

Sun Cities Editor Rusty Bradshaw received the following email from a Sun City resident a few weeks after a page 1 story about an erosion problem faced by a small condo association.

A drainage port at the bottom of a common wall allowed water runoff to drain outside the community onto property owned by SRP, a private utility company. Because of debris dumped at the end of the drainage path, erosion was eating away at the earth toward the wall and residents were concerned about the wall eventually collapsing because of erosion. Residents’ efforts to get a solution with the utility company or the county were going nowhere until the story appeared in the Sun City Independent.

Just thought I’d let u know that 2 people from the legal & claims dept of SRP called me & we met this a.m. so they could see the problem of the eroding ditch on their property which is effecting the retaining wall. It was very congenial & they definitely see the problem & will contact their engineering dept to consider options on fixing the ditch.  So maybe we have their attention now & something will be done.

Valley Press in the Spotlight

 On February 25th Valley Newspapers had the opportunity to host the cameras and production crew of a large nationally televised talent show. For a few hours that Sunday morning they came in to film our press running. We had a camera operator scooting around the pressroom on a Segway filming. They also had an actor walk across the catwalk on the second level. And, I'm sure Jose Beltron, one of our employees will make his small screen debut.

This was a fun time for all that were involved. The television folks seemed impressed with the Newspaper production process; we were with theirs too.

The Production Assistant contacted us about filming at the shop a few weeks before. He said they needed a press to film part of the opening for the first episode of this season. The spot is about the show being so big this year they needed more stickers printed. We told him we didn't print stickers but, he could film here if that works. His response was "your press is big, that is what we need".

Thanks to Wanda Ford-Waring for reviewing some last-minute emails to work out insurance-related logistics before the filming started.

Scottsdale Independent hosts community forum

The Scottsdale Independent on March 1 hosted its first community forum. Over 90 people attended the panel discussion at Scottsdale Community College to hear an update on "The Changing Face of Downtown Scottsdale." Four community leaders, including the Scottsdale city manager, shared updates and future plans for city's downtown. The discussion was moderated by Managing Editor Terrance Thornton.
