W2s Printed on January 9
All W2s will be printed on January 9, 2012 and mailed as soon as possible by our payroll processor. You can access to view and print W-2s via the SeeMyW2 web site on January 9, 2012 as well. In Ceridian Self Service click on the link See My W2 under the Payroll & Tax heading. You can also import tax data into Intuit’s Turbo Tax from See My W2. If you have never accessed See My W2 you will need to register using your social security number and the access code of 2011W2. If you are a returning employee use the password you established when setting up your account. If you need your password reset please email inipayroll@newszap.com
INCREASE YOUR 401k INVESTMENT and SAVE FOR RETIREMENT!
Effective January 1, 2012, most employees can defer up to $17,000 of their annual salary to their 401k investment plan --- a $500 increase over the limit in 2011. Employees age 50 and older can defer up to $22,500. In most cases, each participant may defer up to the maximum allowed by law. The plan defers taxes on the amount you invest in your 401k account. Independent matches 50% of a participant's total contribution to his or her 401k up to $250 in the plan year that began July 1, 2011. If you would like to increase your contribution, it's simple! Click on Self Service and log on. Select 401k Elections under the Benefit heading to make your changes. Email inipayroll@newszap.com with questions or problems making the change in Self Service.

Volunteer of Year
Heather Cregar, Promotions Manager for the Delaware State News, was named Kent County Tourism’s Volunteer of the Year in a surprise announcement at a November luncheon ceremony celebrating the organization’s 20th anniversary. Heather was recognized for her many hours of service to events such as Dover Days.

Sun City Independent Praised For Their Contribution To Festival

Mike Celebrates 10 Years
ANNIVERSARY PROFILE
10 YEARS
Name: Michael Fenimore
Newspaper: Pretty much all of them. But based in the Dover, DE corporate offices.
Position: My title is Hardware/Software systems manager, but I have been called the company ‘firefighter’ a few times. *S*
Number of years in the newspaper or printing business: Since this is my 10th year, I have been in the printing/paper business that long. Working for DSN was my first position with any news media.
Job description: My main duties are to maintain, troubleshoot and set up computers to be used in various capacities. Primarily user oriented. I have been tasked in the past to assist with our website and small servers for automation. I also do training of Photoshop and pre-press files with Tom Bugbee for Delaware Printing Company’s commercial clients.
What I like best (about my job): I’d have to say the people. It’s nice to walk around the building or be on the phone with someone and be able to make the one-on-one contact. Sharing family crises or celebrations, jokes … and even those special chocolate treats I get from time to time.
Most memorable moment with INI: That’s a tough one. There have been a few. I think I’d have to say watching the KBA press fire up the first time in the new, now 6 year old plant. Watching it and hearing it ‘fire up’ and being amazed at the speed and clarity of the print. That one moment brought goose bumps.
Hobbies/Interests: Well, of course computers are in the list. But my main focus is and pretty much always has been music. I play guitar and attempt to sing once in a while in a 4 piece rock (Y’allternative – a mix of rock, country and mostly eclectic styles of alternative music) band here in Dover.
I can’t forget to mention my daughter Alyssa and her son, now almost 2 years old. And of course the rest of my kids and grand-kids. (oh, can’t forget to mention the animals in the house! 3 cats and a snake.)
Fun fact (about myself): I was a Delaware State News paper-boy from 1968-1970. I had a small route in downtown Dover with about 40 customers. So maybe this was actually my first job in the newspaper business.

What I like best (about my job): The creative challenges I'm presented with on a daily basis
Most memorable moment with INI: All of my moments have been pretty memorable. It's difficult to choose just one. We've raced the clock on final deadline for many a special section, but looking at that finished product and seeing a job well done is certainly the most rewarding moment.
Hobbies/Interests: Reading, writing. I participate in online role-playing games as well
Fun fact (about myself): Every November since 2007, I've taken part in the NaNoWriMo challenge. November is the National Novel Writing Month, and the challenge is to write a 50,000 word novel in 30 days. I've only officially won it once, in 2008, but I'm confident that this year will break my losing streak. As of November 28, I'm just 2,073 words short of my goal.

Ironically, the two met several years ago while Brian was meeting with one of his advertisers (who happens to be Jennifer's mother!). Independent Supports Community
Address Change
All PO Boxes for the Dover offices are being phased out by the end of 2011. In order to avoid delays in mail delivery, all mail addressed to the offices in Dover should be mailed to 110 Galaxy Drive, Dover, DE 19901. This includes Delaware State News (Editorial, Advertising, and Distribution); Corporate Services (Billing, Accounting, Accounts Payable, and Accounts Receivable) and Delaware Printing Company. Please contact anyone you do business with who sends mail to the Dover location and let them know of this change as well.
Clewiston Goes Wild Over Halloween Pictures
We decided to do a little something different this year for Halloween and engage our communities in a simple way -- we couldn’t have imagined just how well the community was going to respond.
In total, we photographed 65 kids and adults in costumes. We posted an album of pictures on Facebook and invited the public to vote on their favorites. Kids smiled. Kids frowned (Juan scared half the kids to death). Some just outright cried.
We were able to get local businesses to chip in to our efforts, and offered a $30 Wal-Mart gift card for first place, a $20 certificate to a local Cuban restaurant for second place, and a punch card good for free slushies for third place. We asked folks to vote for their favorites (Melissa Agee’s suggestion).
Clewiston went goo-goo ga-ga over the pictures.
Our previous benchmark for success in a posting was 100 likes – an all-time high that came when we reported that the local team grabbed a hugely unexpected win against a rival school. The number of likes for our Halloween album, however, was nearly 2,500 in just two days.
It even helped us cross the 3,000 likes threshold for our page.
It was incredible to see our notifications racking up with hundreds of notifications, all of them likes. People loved the concept, congratulated us for pulling it off so well, and are already making plans to win next year’s contest.
We’d like to thank everyone who helped to make it happen and Amy McKown for the idea. Good work team!

When Opportunity Came Knocking Valley Grabbed It
“We went from phase two to phase seven over a four year period it seems,” said Valley GM Steve Steinke. “We upgraded our press in the building in 2008, and before we could ever really get cycling on all cylinders with that, the Dow Jones opportunity was knocking at our door.”
While there have been some serious enhancements and additions to the press, there will still be two passes every night to get the job out the door. Commercial clients and INI printing remain intact, and Valley is working to keep that mostly seamless.
“Perhaps the biggest change for us from a production standpoint is that we now have a mechanical inserting line in place to handle the Dow Jones products and as many of our own and commercial products as we can,” Steve noted. “The confidence that Dow Jones has shown in our company and Valley is a credit to all who have dedicated their years of service. Now we have to perform day in and day out with a publication that has a national stage, all the while taking care of our loyal commercial customers too.”
The Dow Jones products for Phoenix were printed for years in Riverside, California. A few years back, those were moved to a printer in Tucson.
"Our ability to enhance the press in a way that will give them more flexibility with color and page counts was a big reason why they selected us. Add in the factor that most of their circulation is in Maricopa County and Phoenix, and it made logistical sense for them too.”
“We have a lot of work ahead of us to make good things happen for them on a predictable level with a high level of quality each and every printing. It’s a balance of good equipment, new technology, and people who enjoy and believe in what we are doing here,” Steve said. “Without a core group of people who are up to the challenge, this might never have been considered a possibility.”
“At a time when other printers are struggling to keep their dream alive, we are humbled by the chance to grow and look forward to some more opportunities yet ahead.”
In addition to the Dow Jones products, Valley has more than 80 commercial clients and a number of Independent Newspapers to print. With 10 color towers and two folders, the facility is one of the largest and most versatile single width web presses in the Southwest.

Picture Perfect
Okeechobee News Editor Katrina Elsken is the adult leader for the new Okeechobee County 4-H Digital Photography and Video Club. The club members met for the first time on Sept. 19 at the Okeechobee News office and chose the name "Picture Perfect" for their club. The club is open to children ages 12 to 18 who are registered 4-H members (and thus covered by 4H insurance at all club meetings and functions.) We hope to see some of the club's photos in the newspaper and their videos on our facebook page.

A Fun Day To Remember
The poster said “Let’s Party” and party they did! From noon until 3PM on Wednesday, Sept. 21, the Delmarva employees enjoyed hot dogs, hamburgers, salads, ice cream and cookies.
A big hit was the money cube where participants had 30 seconds to catch all the one dollar bills flying around in the cube they could. Sounds easy but it obviously wasn’t as many walked away with less than $5.

The Chronicle Sponsors 5K Smiles for Freedom Run/Walk
The Milford Chronicle was one of the corporate sponsors for the 2nd annual 5K Smiles for Freedom Run/Walk. The race was originally scheduled for Sept. 8 to kick off the annual Riverwalk "Freedom" Festival, Milford's premier fall festival. On the afternoon of Sept. 8, heavy rains temporarily flooded some of Milford's streets just before the 6:30 p.m. start time. Organizers, the Chamber of Commerce for Greater Milford, decided to postpone the race until Sept. 15. The festival went on as planned on Sept. 10, and on Sept. 15 about 100 runners and walkers were off and running . . . or walking. Once again, the weather was not the best. Participants faced strong winds and the threat of rain, but everyone finished. Lance Skinner, husband of former Delaware State News copy editor Beth Skinner, placed first overall. After the race, runners and families enjoyed a post-race party in Abbott's Grill banquet room. Gwen Guerke, Milford Chronicle and Harrington Journal editor, represented the hometown paper and finished first in her age group.

Let’s Party
There will be a horseshoe pitching tournament beginning at 1:30PM. We currently have a 2-person team from 4 departments but we are looking for more. Banner Face Lift and Sparkle Can Be Seen Around Town
The past few months the entire Banner team has been working to refurbish and update the paper’s honor boxes.
The advertising, circulation and editorial departments have joined together to help get our honor boxes refurbished and what has been produced is great.
Almost half of the racks in and around the city of Cambridge – more than 20 – have been repainted, repaired and fitted with new rack cards.
The goal is to boost The Banner’s brand and get the word out about how to subscribe to the paper – the staff has done a lot of great work and has had a lot of fun doing it.
Every member of the team has pitched in with the design, painting, repair and distribution of boxes. A lot of free and personal time has gone into this effort.
The new basic honor box design is a blue box – painted by the staff in Cambridge, either True Blue or Global Blue -- with The Banner decals placed horizontally on both sides and the front. The color helps the box stand out and the decals can be easily seen by passersby. Each box has been fitted with a billboard-like rack card with subscription information and how to find The Banner on Facebook and Twitter.
Some Banner team members have gone a step further.
An especially artistic staffer added a special touch to the box stationed at the Dorchester County Airport. In front of a very popular restaurant there, Kay’s at the Airport, is a rack that features hand painted details -- a cartoon plane, man with a parachute and a hot air balloon with some clouds on the front and two airplane models that are regularly seen at the airport on the side.
A few boxes, strategically placed around the area, feature a “metallic sparkle” paint job. The deep blue paint has tiny reflective pieces that shine and give the boxes a unique look.
The staff is working on a few other “special” boxes that will feature decorations that celebrate Maryland’s Eastern Shore and the area the paper makes its home.
The Banner’s staff feels that a few tastefully done “special” boxes will go a long way in getting people talking about and buying The Banner.

Not Forgotten
Delaware State News photographer Dave Chambers captured the many tears, salutes and memorials on Sunday as Delaware firefighters, police officers, elected officials and community members paid tribute to those lost 10 years ago during the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks.
Delaware State News staff reporter Jessica Eisenbrey along with several family members climbed 110 stories of stairs at Dover International Speedway in honor of the 343 firefighters and paramedics who lost their lives during the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks. Jessica, who comes from a long line of volunteer firefighters, climbed the stairs in memory of NYFD firefighter Carl V. Bini of Rescue 5.

Updated logo for Arizona group!
The Arizona group has revised its Independent Newspapers logo to reflect the new corporate name, as well as a new slogan designed to reinforce the group's image as the leader in local news coverage.
The new "Independent NewsMedia" logo continues to incorporate the "newszap.com" name as well as the new slogan: "Local News? We've Got You've Covered."
According to Bret McKeand, vice president of operations, the new slogan was chosen from nearly three dozen possible suggestions submitted by team members throughout the region.
"We felt the 'We've got you covered' slogan could be adapted to a number of different uses -- whether it was for local news in the newspaper or our online products."
The new logo was designed by Chris Williams, a member of the West Valley team.

Richard Dyer Celebrates 24 Years With INI
ANNIVERSARY PROFILE
24 YEARS
Name: Richard H. Dyer
Newspapers: Apache Junction/Gold Canyon, Gilbert, Mesa and Queen Creek/San Tan Valley Independent newspapers.
Position: Managing editor
Number of years in the newspaper or printing business: 24 years. I started as a copy editor for the Apache Junction Independent on Aug. 13, 1987.
Job description: I do a little bit of everything here – writing, photography, copy editing, pagination, managing, backup for news services and graphics.
What I like best (about my job): The people I work with.
Most memorable moment with INI: When signs were posted on Apache Trail in Apache Junction at the beginning and end of the one-mile section from Idaho Road to Ironwood Drive showing Independent Newspapers was in the city’s adopt-a-street program.
Hobbies/Interests: I’m a welded-steel sculptor. A sculpture I donated to Mesa Community College was unveiled in a ceremony last October (photos are on my artist Facebook page; look for “Rick’s Welded Works”). This summer I had my first juried art show, in California, where I set out my wares for sale in a booth and explained my work to hundreds of prospective customers. I am also the volunteer production editor for The Blue Guitar arts and literary magazine, http://www.theblueguitarmagazine.org/ (my wife, Rebecca, is the volunteer editor); I do the InDesign and PhotoShop work.
Fun fact (about myself): My wife and I enjoy storm chasing. We saw our first tornado May 31, 2010, outside Campos, Colo. It started from a wisp in a cloud above us and ended up being recorded as an EF-2 capable of 111-135 mph winds. We followed it and a couple other tornadoes, snapping photos and recording video along the way.
A few facts (about myself): I am married (my wife also is a journalist, working as a copy editor for a daily newspaper). We are members of the American Copy Editors Society, http://www.copydesk.org/ . This year’s ACES conference was in Phoenix, where I presented on the small-staffs panel with two other journalists; I hope to also be part of the same seminar panel at the April 12-14, 2012, conference in New Orleans.

Job description: I do a little bit of everything here – writing, photography, copy editing, pagination, managing, backup for news services and graphics.
What I like best (about my job): The people I work with.
Most memorable moment with INI: When signs were posted on Apache Trail in Apache Junction at the beginning and end of the one-mile section from Idaho Road to Ironwood Drive showing Independent Newspapers was in the city’s adopt-a-street program.
Hobbies/Interests: I’m a welded-steel sculptor. A sculpture I donated to Mesa Community College was unveiled in a ceremony last October (photos are on my artist Facebook page; look for “Rick’s Welded Works”). Book Illustrator Explains Craft To Students
Scott Taylor, an advertising representative for the Apache Junction/Gold Canyon, Mesa, Gilbert and Queen Creek/San Tan Valley Independent newspapers, spoke to Avalon Elementary students Aug. 18 on the importance of learning to read. He also explained how he illustrates children’s books. For older students later, he spoke about designing the inside cover of an espionage novel. Avalon Elementary, an Excalibur charter school, is at 1045 S. San Marcos Drive in Apache Junction. The Banner Receives A Sweet Thank You
On Tuesday, Aug. 16, representatives from the Antioch United Methodist Church came into The Banner’s office to thank the newspapers staff – specifically Sylvia Windsor – for helping to publicize the church’s recent Peach Festival.
The event, held Aug. 13, was the most successful peach festival to date, according to the group.
The church members said they attributed their success to The Banner.
Sylvia entered the event in the The Banner’s calendar listings for a number of weeks and then just before the event she broke out the listing in a peach colored box on the calendar page.
The group brought Sylvia a handwritten thank you card that said “Thanks for the wonderful publicity for our Peach Festival. It was a great success.”
The church also brought The Banner’s staff a basket of fresh peaches.

A Bundle of Joy for Tim Menasco
Dover Graphic Artist Tim Menasco welcomed grandchild number 3 on July 2, 2011. Tyson Alexander Caputo weight 7 pounds, 8 ounces and is 20 inches long. Congratulations to Tim and his family!
