Leadership Central Delaware class visits Delaware State News and Delaware Printing Company

Members of the Leadership Central Delaware Class of 2019 recently participated in Communications and Media Day at the Delaware State News and Polytech High School.

The LCD class toured the printing plant, learned about the Delaware State News and its mission, and heard presentations on the Delaware State Fair and Dover Air Force Base Public Affairs.

Delaware State News Executive Editor Andrew West served as chair of Communications Day for the 16th consecutive year.

As part of the daylong program, West led the group in a reporting exercise that concluded with “news anchors” reading the story in the studio at Polytech High School.

The news exercise starts with a news tip that prompts them to think about what they need to find out quickly. From there, the group has reporters learn more about a crime scene and then they have to quickly determine what, if anything, gets shared on a website immediately. After that, the group has a chance to participate in a mock press conference with a police chief and others to get details. Each group then determines what will go in the final news story and one member from each of the four groups gets the opportunity to read the news from the anchor desk in the Polytech studio.

It includes quick a bit of deadline pressure in the way the news report comes together. Essentially, all of it is accomplished in less than two hours.

Students at Polytech High School use the opportunity to show off skills they have learned in the Broadcast Media program. Members of the LCD class remarked about the students’ poise and professional nature.

Leadership Central Delaware is a program of the Central Delaware Chamber of Commerce. It is designed to expose business leaders to various segments of the economy in the area over a 10-month period.

This Bud's For .

This buds for Andre who was off the clock and on his way out the door when I needed some help finding Sunday inserts. He came back inside and climbed inside the trailer that holds the recycled papers and fished some way out of rear box. Andre is always willing to help out whenever asked and we really do appreciate him.
