Welcome Linda to our Arizona Region

Please welcome Linda McThrall to the West Valley office.  Linda has joined the INI team as a copy editor.

 Immediate Family:

I am married (43 years) with one married daughter, who lives in Charleston, SC, with her husband. They have three cats. No kids. Therefore, I am not a grandmother. It's okay. I've learned to accept it.

Where are you from? Or Where did you grow up?

I have lived in Arizona for more than 50 years. I was born in Durango, Colo., went to high school in Oklahoma City, Okla., and moved to Phoenix to attend Arizona State University where I got my journalism degree.

Prior employers and very brief job description?

I have spent most of my career in newspapers (many of those years at the Fountain Hills Times), but I also worked three years for a bi-weekly newspaper in Kingfisher, Okla. I took a break from newspapers and worked for a nonprofit mental health education foundation before returning to Fountain Hills in 2005. I was there until 2022 when I took a position at a small museum in Fountain Hills as development and community outreach director.

 Hobbies/Interests:

I love reading and spending time outside when the weather permits. Traveling, spending time with friends and family, cooking and baking are some of my interests.

Labor Day in Okeechobee

The Lake Okeechobee News had a booth at the Okeechobee Labor Day Festival in Flagler Park in downtown Okeechobee on Sept. 4. Circulation Assistant Rick Lewis handed out the newspaper, the Lake Okeechobee Real Estate Guide, the School Information Guide and other publications and sold subscriptions. August Mission Stories

Delaware State News: Intrusion shuts down Kent County’s network

For more than a month, mystery surrounded an intrusion which shut down Kent County government’s network.

On August 23, reporter Craig Anderson learned more about what happened and what the county has been doing since.

According to Kent’s information technology director Joseph Simmons, a BlackCat virus had erased everything on the county’s network.

“What they do is come in and attack your servers and encrypt everything and then delete certain control files,” he explained. “Let me put it like this: They come in and basically blank out your brain.”

Not only was there a loss of access for Kent Countians to services, there was a huge cost to restore operations: $419,240.

Salisbury Independent: Mayor’s departure headlines election coverage

A flurry of activity occurred on candidate filing deadline day Aug. 22 in Salisbury, and Salisbury Independent was there to sort out and report on the last-minutes entries and withdrawals.

In a surprise move, the city’s incumbent mayor announced his departure from the race, clearing the way for three divergent contenders headed into the fall. The newspaper’s coverage also included pertinent details on the five City Council races.

The extensive filing day coverage will position the newspaper as the go-to source for all election news through November.

Dorchester Banner: Empowerment Center offers good news

In August, reporter Debra Messick delivered a charming and encouraging story on the Cambridge Empowerment Center, the Pine Street neighborhood’s community hub.

This summer, the center has welcomed a full roster of 45 area youngsters, many participating in the Pine Street Enrichment Program, which is fully licensed by the state of Maryland.

Readers and participants reacted positively to Messick’s story, which told of the array of kid-friendly weekly themes, with subjects like arts and crafts; land, air and water creatures; careers; food around the world; music, dance and drama; STEM; and sports and physical movement.

Crisfield-Somerset County Times: Correctional officer memorialized

The memory of a correctional officer murdered by a former inmate in a case that went unsolved for nearly 20 years will not be forgotten as a sign dedicated to the late Gregory G. Collins was unveiled by his family on Ocean Highway near where he worked at Eastern Correctional Institution.

The Crisfield-Somerset County Times reported on the emotional service in early August.

“This is a very bittersweet moment, (and) a long time coming,” said former Assistant Warden Ronnie Dryden. “Twenty-two years now, and 18 years as a cold case, I cannot imagine what the family went through.”

2023 August Mission Stories Florida Group

Hurricane Idalia spares South Florida

During hurricane season, an important part of the INI Florida Group’s mission to the community is to keep the public prepared for storms and informed of current conditions.

Throughout the summer, we have included stories on hurricane supplies, securing your home, securing your boat and making plans to keep your family and pets safe.

In August, the first big storm to threaten this season arrived in the form of Hurricane Idalia, a category 3 storm which came up the Gulf of Mexico and made landfall in the “big bend” area of Florida (where the panhandle meets the peninsula.) From experience, we knew that right up until landfall there is a danger a storm can shift, so it was important for everyone to stay prepared.

Fortunately, the communities served by the INI Florida Group were spared any damages from Idalia. But the hurricane season runs through the end of November and historically, the late season storms have been the worst for our area. We’ll continue to do our part to keep our communities prepared.

Gunfire at birthday party

On Aug. 27, the Okeechobee community was shocked by news of the murder of a 16-year-old boy by another teen at a quinceaƱera (15th birthday party).  Southcentralfloridalife.com was the first news media to share news about the shooting that left one teen dead and three teens injured, and has kept up the most current and complete follow-ups on the story. The Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Office is still piecing together exactly what led up to the shooting and how many shooters and guns were involved. While only one pistol was recovered at the scene, more than two dozen shell casings were found.

Summer heat brings dangers

The summer heat has been brutal this year, and the dangers of heat injury have been highlighted in the INI Florida newspapers from many viewpoints. Richard Marion spoke to coaches about the impact on practices for the fall football season.
