If
we had the choice, we would rather not have to worry about hurricanes.
But
for news folks like us, it creates unique challenges to report on stories that
truly matter to our readers.
The
Delaware State News won first place in the Spot News category of the 2012
Maryland-Delaware-D.C. Press Association Editorial Contest for its coverage of
Hurricane Sandy, the superstorm that spared Delaware from its wrath.
Winners
were announced Friday at a gathering of newspaper editors, reporters and
photographers in Baltimore.
The
Oct. 31 edition, featuring 12 pages of storm coverage, carried the headline
“Sandy feat” in large letters across a photo showing the devastation to the
beaches and highway at the Indian River Inlet in Sussex.
“Kudos
to the Delaware State News staff for its extensive coverage in the aftermath of
Superstorm Sandy,” a contest judge wrote. “From public safety to utilities to
school closures, their stories provided valuable details to readers.”
News
Editor Ashley Dawson and reporters Craig Anderson, Jen Rini, Eleanor La Prade
and Chris Flood all had bylines.
Freelance
photographer Marc Clery provided the great page one photo. Photo editor Dave
Chambers and others contributed photos.
Our
copy editors Dave Hughes, Craig Horleman and Allan Ryder all helped bring the
pieces together in a quality fashion.
For
the Delaware State News, it’s always a point of pride to have a team entry
awarded for a job well done.
